We see Marla forcibly married to a man not of her choosing, and over the course of the book we watch her grow from a silly teenager who can hardly open her mouth without putting her foot in it into a crafty stateswoman determined to become the real power behind the throne of Hythria. Are you simply born into it?
Once I stopped trying to figure out how this fit in with the other trilogy set in the same world, and decided it was a prequel, I was able to much better sort out events in my head, and follow the building story along to a climax, which while rather delicious led to some obvious plot twists, and while one scene did completely delight me, I would have preferred some closure with respect a few of the characters.
This second trilogy is a prequel about Marla and her son Damin Wolfblade, comrade of The Demon Child in the first 3 books. It also means the most powerful guy in a particular political hierarchy is mostly a non-player in the intrigue, so we get to read more about people who aren’t the pedobear instead.
First came The Demon Child Trilogy.
The one thing I really, really dislike about the story and which ruined it for me, however, is the names. Giver it a go and see if fallin liked it more than me. Jul 29, Zaryna rated it it was amazing Shelves: She is not alone in this once-unacceptable practice: The Best Books of Fortunately the element is really minor in the story, but even if it was used jeennifer, it would completely throw away any chances of realism. I highly recommend her work.
The book boasts a large cast of characters who all plot for gain or survival.
Wolfblade (The Hythrun Chronicles: Wolfblade Trilogy, Book 1) — book review
Until the end where the reader sees how very much Marla has learned about the politics of survival. Political fantasy, where there is no earth-shattering threat involved, can be boring, but Fallon avoids that trap as well. Marla Wolfblade of Hythria is determined to restore her family’s great name, but conspirators surround her: Enjoyed it as much the second time and while I remembered some stuff, I’d forgotten enough that the reading was almost like new. Regains his amnesia only too come back to the human world and give Marla a tad bit of information.

This is a high fantasy story, of the swords and politics kind. This was the first Jennifer Fallon book I’ve read, and even though it is a prequel to a different series, it reads just fine as a beginning point.
Add your preferred email address and password to your account. It’s not as dark as the Kushiel trilogy, nor as bleak as the Farseer Trilogy, but it has that same quality of “things happen and people are as they are”. Wolfblade begins that story. She is in good company: It might get better in the sequel but the problem is that I’m not motivated to read on.
So it was a treat to read a low-magic Fantasy book with an emphasis on political intrigue, multiple characters with believable and opposing agendas, and surprises and deaths of major characters. Aron Nykom are the characters from the first trilogy in this part and of the bigger picture of callon series? It is probably the first book I have read which is like that, and which is also good on jehnifer of that.
Hythrun Chronicles: Wolfblade Series
From the moment I read the first sentence of chapter one, I was captivated. PLUS as I discovered as I got further through the book and as was hinted with the first chapter, it is just as cut throat as Game of Thrones. I just kept begging for the Harshini chapters to be over so I could read more about the juicy drama and political maneuvering.
Refresh and try again. One or two of them might prefer to be thought of as primarily literary or historical writers, but surely it’s time for fantasy to stop being the genre that dare not show its face? Marla is to be married off to the King of Fardohnya as part of a political bargain, but dissidents within Hythria are determined to remove Lernan from power. There is no “outcast” male romantic interest or kind noble women whose hearts goes out to the poor etc.
I could also blame a few specific books behind it on my shelf, but, ultimately, I was looking for something more engaging than what I got from this one at this point.
Fallon is a master of pacing. I wasnt completely sure I was going to enjoy it, but because it had Tor Fantasy on the spine I decided to give it a try. There were no good or bad characters. So I was willing to forgive her for being a bratty teenager at the beginning, because she really grew up during those years. If you are already a Fallon fan, you must pick this book up.
